Tejano legend Juan P. Moreno, widely known as the “King of the Bajo Sexto,” is stepping boldly into a new chapter — one defined by faith, resilience, and fresh music.
In an emotional and inspiring interview on The Bo Corona Show, Moreno spoke candidly about his recent health battle, signing with 1901 Records, and his triumphant return to the top of the charts with “Si Me Dices Que Sí.”
“I’m under 1901 Records. I just signed with them this year over here at Monterrey and we got a lot of good stuff coming up and a lot of great stuff coming, new stuff,” Moreno shared. “I want to thank everybody, everybody that prayed for me, all the prayers. Dios es grande and I’m a witness.”

A Life-Changing Diagnosis
In June 2024, Moreno announced he would be stepping away from the music scene to address serious health concerns. What followed was one of the most challenging chapters of his life.
“I got really sick,” he revealed. “I lost 57 pounds. I have three tumors and two of them are on my pancreas. I have a chronic pancreatic disease which is autoimmune. And the other tumor is on one of my arteries to my heart.”
Moreno described the psychological toll of initially being told he might have cancer.
“When they tell you that you have cancer, psychologically, no matter who you are, it hurts, man, and it can take you down. It took me down,” he admitted.
After being hospitalized in Monterrey, Moreno’s daughter, urged him to seek further treatment near Austin. He spent seven days at a hospital in Texas, undergoing extensive testing and biopsies. The results brought life-changing news: the tumors were benign.
“When they told me that it wasn’t cancer… psychologically, man,” he said, pausing to reflect. “I was praying and I know a lot of people were praying. Your life changes. My life changed completely.”
Today, Moreno says he is stronger than ever.
“I’ve gained weight back, I’m strong again, I’m dancing again, I’m on stage again. I’ve got a badass band and an awesome manager, Luis from Monterrey. We travel USA and back, the whole band.”
A No. 1 Comeback
Moreno’s return has been nothing short of remarkable. His single “Si Me Dices Que Sí” soared to No. 1 on the Tejano Gold Countdown for four consecutive weeks last October — a powerful milestone for an artist whose career spans decades.
The song itself has a special story.
“That comes from a great, awesome musician — Tony Tigre Sáenz from Laredo,” Moreno explained. “He’s a bajo sexto player himself. He wrote that song years ago for us.”
According to Moreno, the song was originally intended for a reunion project but never made it into his hands — until years later.
“He told me, ‘If you want it, I’ll send it to you.’ So he sent it to me. I put a few arrangements to it and I did it with Aaron Holler.”
Moreno praised producer Aaron Holler for helping bring back the classic Chamaco-era sound that longtime fans love.
“Aaron Holler is an awesome producer… he brought back a lot of the Chamaco stuff. He said, ‘Remember you used to do this?’”
The result was a track that not only resonated with fans but reaffirmed Moreno’s place among Tejano’s elite.
