SAN ANTONIO, TX — Jesse Peralez, a beloved Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame musician, passed away on Friday, January 31. The news was confirmed by his publicist and friend, Mary Jane Segura, who shared the heartbreaking announcement on social media, describing the shock and grief felt by those closest to him.
“It saddens me and my heart is breaking, but I must inform our music industry, our friends, and family, that our dear friend Jesse Peralez has gained his wings, just a few hours ago,” Segura wrote. “Jesse Peralez was loved and treasured by many. He was a very talented musician. He had the biggest heart and would gladly help anyone.”
Peralez’s death has left a profound void in the Tejano music community. He was known for his exceptional saxophone playing as an original member of La Mafia, one of the most iconic bands in the genre, and also played with other notable groups like Xelencia and Magnifico Siete. His passion for music was evident in every note he played, and his talent went far beyond just performing. Peralez was also a gifted songwriter, creating music that transcended the traditional Tejano sound.
Segura, in her emotional statement, reflected on Peralez’s approach to life, noting that he always strived to make peace with everyone and live without regrets. “Jesse lived his life to the fullest. He made sure to make peace with anyone because he didn’t like conflict,” she said. “He didn’t want to have any regrets. I am so proud that he pursued his dreams and released his album 15 years in the making.”
In 2022, Peralez released his solo album Solamente, a project with Red Room Recordz that marked a departure from his earlier work with La Mafia and Xelencia. The album showcased his versatility as an artist, stepping outside the box to explore new sounds and ideas. Segura shared that Peralez had recently recorded a few tracks for his musical brothers, which will now be some of his final recordings and treasured by his fans forever

While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, Segura hinted that Peralez had been struggling with health issues in recent times. She shared a message of comfort, stating, “We know he is no longer in pain. God wanted him home earlier than what we expected. Jesse, we love you, and you will be greatly missed.”
Tejano legend David DeAnda of Xelencia shared his sentiments. He said, “Still in disbelief after hearing of the passing of one of our own. Our deepest most sincere condolences go out to the family of Jesse Peralez. Thanks for the memories over all these years. We were blessed to have been able to share the stage with you. We had some fun times over the road and simply just hanging out. You will be greatly missed.”
As the Tejano music community mourns the loss of this legendary figure, Segura requested prayers and support for Peralez’s family, including his wife, children, and loved ones. She also urged fans to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. “Right now, we ask for prayers for his wife, children, family and friends, and his fans. Let’s respect their privacy at this time. Once we have funeral arrangements, we will let you know. At this time, we are trying to process losing our Jesse. Let’s pray for comfort and understanding, and the strength to move forward.”
Peralez’s legacy will live on through his music, and his contributions to Tejano music will be remembered for generations to come. As fans and fellow musicians alike honor his memory, the profound impact he had on the genre and the hearts of those who knew him will never fade.
