Devin Banda has made a triumphant return to the Tejano music scene after a four-year hiatus with the release of her new six-track EP, Vamos a Brindar, on December 27. The 2012 Tejano Idol runner-up shared details about her latest project in an interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo.
Devin, who worked on the album with her husband Lucky Joe and award-winning hitmaker Gabriel Zavala, said, “So it has been in the works for around two years I would say, and I was super adamant that I wanted to get it out this year. I wanted to start off the year of 2025 with new music and you know eventually going back and performing and so on and so forth. So super excited about that.”
She continued, “I’m super happy that my husband was involved in it and we were able to work together and get my view exactly how I wanted it with this EP. It’s for the women, it’s for everyone, but it’s primarily for women this album, this EP. They can relate to it very very well if they’ve ever experienced heartbreak or you know they were ever in a situation where they were lied to, cheated on.”
Reflecting on her hiatus and return to music, Devin added, “I’ve just been working. I’ve been working a lot. I don’t know I kind of just with COVID happening I think that was a start of me kind of just settling down. I didn’t see a rush and I shouldn’t have. I kind of regret you know putting my music aside because when I didn’t have it I realized how much I loved it and how much I wanted to do it and then it just got harder. It got harder to get back on and start going again.”
Devin began her career as a teenager, releasing her debut album Unstoppable in 2017, which earned her a Tejano Music Awards nomination for Best New Female Artist. Her latest EP is special, as she teamed up with her husband Lucky Joe, whom she wed in September 2023. “It was really really fun. We got to you know experience that whole two artists joining one project together and there were times where we’re like you know does this sound good? Does this sound good? And we would kind of contradict but in the end we made it all work and I’m so happy and proud of this one.”
The 29-year-old singer also co-wrote a few songs on the EP with her husband. “So I can write a little bit. I do but I use Google Translate. Yes the ‘Eres de Todas’ was like I showed him for the majority of that I was you know had it listed and he’s like you know this word and this word so it’s super nice to have him here to help me with how to organize the words and everything like that when I’m working on songs alone but he’s incredible. He’s so talented and I can only hope that it rubs off on me more.”
Devin shared her favorite song from the album, “I think ‘Soy La Otra Mujer’ maybe. I think that one is just a really pretty song, but I think all of them are really good.” She also spoke about her latest single and lyric video, “Me Olvidare de Ti,” saying, “That was the cumbia one that we have. So, like cumbia was something that people are familiar with me singing. That’s the kind of style that most are familiar with me, and it was nice.”
