Rick Vega has been a staple in the Tejano music scene since he was just 15 years old. For the past nine years, Rick has been the bass guitarist for Marcos Orozco Y Grupo Rebelde, bringing his unique sound and energy to the band.

Rick’s musical journey began with the Losoya Band, and he has since played with a host of notable Tejano artists, including Elio QuintanillaDee Y ValienteChente BarreraEddie GonzalezGrupo Vida, and the legendary Emilio Navaira. His versatility and talent have also made him a sought-after sit-in musician for various other artists.

Rick’s girlfriend, Destany Guajardo, shares a heartfelt perspective on Rick’s life off the stage. “Rick’s my best friend and my son Elijah’s Da-Yee and best friend too since Elijah was six months old. Elijah turned five back in June and Rick deserves the Best Dad Award for loving our boy through the ups and downs of Elijah’s journey as he battles level two of Autism Spectrum Disorder/ADHD,” she says.

The couple has faced significant challenges, especially since Rick was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer on April 15th. Destany made the decision to become their provider, witnessing their daily struggles and determination. “During the good and bad days, I can’t help but smile through all the tears, frustration, sadness, and tiredness because they’ve both come a long way,” she adds.

Rick and Destany have been open about their battle, sharing updates on social media about Rick’s treatments, upcoming surgery, and Elijah’s progress. “All we ask is that you keep us in your prayers as Rick undergoes what’s called a Whipple procedure, a high-risk complex surgery on October 7th, since the tumor didn’t shrink as we had hoped it would after he did three rounds of chemo,” Destany explains. Rick will need six to eight weeks to recover if no further complications arise.

Despite his health struggles, Rick remains committed to his music. He has a few shows left, including the “Stick with Rick Benefit Dance” on Sunday, September 29th, at the R&J Saloon. “I would like to thank each and every one of these musicians for taking the time to make this concert happen in order to help with medical expenses,” Rick says.
