Tejano music pioneer Ruben Ramos opened up about his journey of reinvention and resilience in a recent interview with Domingo Live host Rudy Trevino. Known for his soulful voice and charismatic stage presence, “El Gato Negro” has been a stalwart in the Tejano music scene for over six decades.
In March 2018, Ramos faced a major health setback when he could no longer sing due to a blockage in his aorta and heart. After undergoing a triple bypass surgery, he spent two years recovering and lost 30 pounds. Just as he was getting back on his feet, the pandemic hit, adding another two years to his return to music.
Despite these challenges, Ramos remained undeterred. “At this moment now, I’m kind of like reinventing myself, trying to get myself back to par and then trying to replace these four main guys that left. So now I’m replacing the guys. I got the full band again. I’m like reinventing myself. I’m here. Now I’m ready to go down,” he shared.
In 2022, the two-time GRAMMY winner released his latest album, “Inolvidable.” When asked about what keeps him going in the music industry after such a long and illustrious career, Ramos had a simple answer: “Music. Music and like my treasures are my fans.”
Ramos also shared a poignant story from his youth, revealing how music saved his life. He recalled how he was going the wrong way until his brothers encouraged him to join them in the band. They convinced him to attend a dance, which turned out to be a life-changing experience. “It’s a lot of pretty girls. And I finally went this way. So music saved my life,” he said.
Ramos’ story is a testament to the power of music and the human spirit. His journey of reinvention serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us that it’s never too late to start anew and keep the music alive.
