The Conjunto genre, a cornerstone of Tejano music, is moving to a new category at the upcoming 67th Grammy Awards. The genre will now be part of the Best Regional Roots Music Album category, shifting from the Best Musica Mexicana (including Tejano) category. This significant change was spearheaded by Piper LeMoine, of the Austin-based nonprofit organization Rancho Alegre, and supported by fellow Recording Academy Texas Chapter members.
“A small, independent release on a Conjunto label recorded by an artist who attracts 100 people on a good night didn’t have a prayer against the well-funded, arena-filling artists in the Regional Mexican/Tejano category. This will give the Conjunto genre more visibility and give its artists a fighting chance to have their music considered by voting members,” said LeMoine in a statement.
Three-time Grammy winner and Texas Chapter Governor of The Recording Academy, Sunny Sauceda, spoke about the move with Tejano Nation. “Well, I think it was a good move for going with the music first because it is a folklore genre, you know, music. It’s… and so it kind of makes it more all these genres are roots-based genres with similar demographics, similar dynamics, so it makes the playing field level,” Sauceda said
Sauceda believes this move is not only a good one but also a genius one. He explained that the Conjunto and Tejano genres are American art forms with Hispanic roots. “We are a reflection of what’s going on in popular music,” he said. He also praised Piper LeMoine for her efforts and believes she should be recognized for this milestone in the history of Conjunto music.
Sauceda expressed his excitement and support for the change. “It’s really cool. She asked me if I would support her in the effort and of course, yes. That’s a great idea. And then when she called me to tell me of it, holy moly. That’s just great. It was the highlight of the week of the month. You know, that’s really cool,” he said.
This move is a significant step for Conjunto music, leveling the playing field and acknowledging the unique cultural roots of the genre. It’s a testament to the ongoing evolution and recognition of Conjunto music in the broader music industry.
