Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez Return with Classic Conjunto Sound

AUSTIN, TX – Rio Grande City Conjunto Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez have released their latest album, Tanto Tanto, on Austin-based Conjunto record label, Rancho Alegre Records. The group will also be performing at the legendary Tejano-Conjunto Festival en San Antonio on Saturday, May 20.

Recorded with the legendary Jesus Cavazos at New Sound Recording Studio in McAllen, Tanto Tanto is the group’s fifth studio album and is a collection of off-the-beaten-path, vintage Conjunto tracks from some of Rodney’s favorite artists. On this album, you’ll hear a couple of Tony De La Rosa polkas, a pair of classic cumbias, a bolero written by Rodney’s old boss Hector Barrón of Los Fantasmas Del Valle, and a heaping helping of rancheras guaranteed to pull you out of your chair.

A veteran musician with over 20 years in the business, Rodney has really grown as a solo artist and bandleader since striking out on his own in 2016. Backing Rodney are his top-notch Cucuys, from the steady bajo sexto and perfectly complimentary second voice of Siji Perez to the unstoppable rhythm section of Beto Perez on bass and Marty Cortez on drums. They’re serious and at the top of their game. Los Cucuys are a throwback in a sense, with their tapitas, vests, and Stacys, favoring finesse over flash and preferring to let the music do the talking for them. They’re not here to be rock stars. They’re here to move you with the best Conjunto around and show you why they’re some of the best in the business right now. It’s this vintage sensibility that lent itself perfectly to this album being produced on vinyl LP. Conjunto record collectors, especially, will be thrilled with these selections, because they’re so evocative of the golden era of modern Conjunto music over half a century ago.

Rancho Alegre Records is a project of the Austin-based Conjunto nonprofit organization, Rancho Alegre, producers of the annual Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival. In addition to Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez, the label has released studio albums with Conjunto artists Johnny Degollado y JJ BarreraMark Weber y Los CuernosBrenda MartinezRamon Lucio y Dominante, and Gilberto Perez Jr., along with live albums from Los EnmascaradosLos Arcos Hermanos PeñaJoe Zimmerle y Su Conjunto, and more.

Tanto Tanto is now available on all digital platforms and on CD and vinyl LP directly from the band, at Del Bravo Record Shop and Janie’s Record Shop in San Antonio, and online from Rancho Alegre.
