HOUSTON, TEXAS — This fall season, music fans can discover Houston’s musical heritage with Tejas Got Soul, a monthly concert series at Discovery Green spotlighting the city’s Tejano history and talent made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
“From the 1960s, when Houston’s Chicano musicians, inspired by the soul, blues and zydeco traditions of Bayou City, crafted a “brown-eyed soul” sound that influenced the Conjunto and Tejano groups that followed, Houston’s Chicano music legacy is distinctive,” according to event organizers. “Enjoy free concerts from bands that exemplify the history and promise of Tejas Got Soul.”
The Pride of Pasadena, La Fiebre, will kick off the series on Sunday, September 25, from 5-7 pm. These rocking Tejano music trendsetters are one of Latin music’s most influential bands. The gold and platinum-selling band bring their explosive performance to the Discovery Green stage for the first time.
Los Monarcas de Pete y Mario Diaz and Grupo Fuerte will perform on Sunday, October 23, from 5-7 p.m. Through three generations and 35 albums the Diaz family and their foot stomping Conjunto music performances are as strong as ever. Discover why their fans remain devoted. Grupo Fuerte is a collection of veteran musicians with more than 200 years of cumulative musical experience.
Grammy-nominated Tejano band Avizo is scheduled for Sunday, November 27, from 5-7 pm. The from Houston, Texas whose sound also embodies cumbia, conjunto, salsa, and vintage R&B. They are locally known as “Houston’s Powerhouse,” which describes their enormous sound and energy. This performance will also pay tribute to two pioneering groups associated with Houston Chicano music legacy: Big Lu y Los Muchachos and Neto Perez and the Young Originals.
