SAN ANTONIO, TX — Tejano icon Jay Perez, known by his fans as “La Voz,” spoke exclusively with Tejano Nation on May 22, along with his wife and backup vocalist, Roxy P, after closing out the 40th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival at Rosedale Park in San Antonio, Texas.

“The Voice” thanked his fans for their support over the years and his Freddie Records label family as well. However, Perez, whose history-making album, El Maestro, topped the iTunes Latin Albums chart less than 24 hours after its release last May, stayed tight-lipped about his upcoming album, which is in the pre-production stages.

“All I can say is that it’s going to be a killer album,” Perez said. “That’s it.”

Roxy added that her husband is being extra selective when it comes to song choices for this new release so fans should expect a top-notch effort.

When asked about performing on stage alongside her famous husband who is known for his skilled vocal talent, Roxy said the experience is both a privilege and an honor.

“I always tell him, ‘I’m not just saying this because I’m your wife, but it really, really is a privilege to be on his stage,'” she said. “He’s never had a female backup singer on stage before.”

Jay is not certain whether he and Roxy will release a recording together on his new album, but did say fans can expect to hear the pair sing live on the duet, “Tu Y Yo,” from the El Maestro album. The song, written by Judi DeLeon, has received positive feedback from fans and topped the Tejano Gold Countdown chart in April.

Jay Perez fans in San Antonio and the surrounding area can catch his next performance on Sunday, May 29, when he performs a special Memorial Day concert at the Thirsty Horse Saloon at 2335 N.W. Military Highway. LaDezz will also perform.

Watch the full interview for more from “La Voz” and Roxy P, including a “Go Mustangs” sign-off that Jay unexpectedly did as a shout-out to his alma mater (and my own!), San Antonio’s John Jay High School.
