Latin pop sensation Frankie J thrilled audiences on Friday night (April 1) with his soulful sounds during a free concert in downtown San Antonio that included the special appearance of urban Tejano artist and fellow Kumbia Kings alum DJ Kane.

Both Frankie J and DJ Kane spoke with Tejano Nation backstage just before their Fiesta 2022 performance at Smoke BBQ+SkyBar.

Tejano Nation correspondent Christina spoke with the talented vocalists who often perform together when the California-based Frankie J visits San Antonio where DJ Kane has lived for the past four years after his relocation from Corpus Christi. Frankie J had performed earlier at the popular, longtime event, Fiesta Oyster Bake.

The two passionate entertainers share an emotive vocal styling that draws screams from the crowd, especially when they collaborate on Kumbia Kings classics such as “Fuiste Mala” and “Desde Que No Estas Aqui.” DJ Kane puts a reggae spin on his delivery of the latter song and both he and Frankie J can belt out those extended high notes.

In the interview, Frankie J revealed he is house hunting in the Houston area for a future move to Texas. He currently lives in California but previously resided in Houston.

Frankie J is currently promoting his latest album Back2Us, which takes listeners on a romantic, heart-wrenching, and soulful journey with his signature R&B crooning style that mixes in Spanish lyrics and features several notable collaborations. Highlights include the title track along with the get-you-in-the-mood, “Pretty Brown Eyes,” which features bilingual rapper Mellow Man Ace, who is recognized as the first Latino artist to have a bilingual hit single and is often referred to as “The Godfather of Latin Rap.” Another standout is “With You,” which features rapper Paul Wall and Raz-B, formerly of the R&B boy band B2K.

Tejano, and specifically Kumbia Kings fans, will enjoy the track, “R U Still Down Wit Us,” which includes three KK alums, DJ Kane, Baby Drew, and Slim. The intro includes the signature Kumbia Kings callout and the danceable tune reminisces about a former love that still burns bright.

DJ Kane fans can catch the charismatic and smooth-voiced entertainer during Fiesta De Los Reyes when he headlines on the San Saba Street Stage from 10:15 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.
