Grupo Solido frontman Ben De Leon announced his candidacy for Place 1 as Rio Grande City Commissioner as the Grammy winner filed to run for public office on Thursday (Feb. 17).
“I believe it is time for me to give back and serve the community that has given me so much,” De Leon said in the statement. “I strongly believe I am a candidate that can relate with the everyday person in Río Grande, ‘Soy del barrio.’ I stand with the people who want a solid future for our community.”
De Leon has been the frontman for Solido since the band debuted in 2000. After over 20 years and more than a dozen successful albums later, Solido remains at the top of their game, winning a GRAMMY Award for Best Tejano Album with their debut album Nadie Como Tu in 2001 and a Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album in 2015 with Sentimientos. The group’s latest album, Incomparable, received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Tejano Album.
