Sonja De La Paz evolves sound with cumbia collaboration featuring Veno Mona

Sonja De La Pazis one of many emerging singers that is powering a current surge of talented female vocalists inla Onda Tejana. The Laredo singer has released her latest single, “Me Decías” featuringVeno Mona, a cumbia definitely created outside of the box.

“It is a song that I wrote with my husband and our friend, Veno Mona. He’s an awesome writer, an awesome musician — he’s awesome. We’re big fans of his,” De La Paz tellsTejano Nation. “We were really excited to bring him on board. I think it took the song to another level. I mean you can definitely tell from the other songs that we’ve written. We felt it kind of important to help Tejano grow, just bring a different flavor so that way, you know, Tejano can evolve and we were really happy to collaborate with him.”

This is the fourth solo single for De La Paz, who burst on the scene during the pandemic after live music was put on hold. She and her husband,Diego Garcia, are members ofPete AstudilloYTekno Mexand even though she’s working on her own thing at the moment, she still plans to be a part of the group.

“We are still in talks with Pete but we’re still not sure what’s going to happen,” she said. “Everybody’s kind of doing their own thing but we still talk and definitely if anything comes up we’re down.”
