JR Gomez signs with Baby Grand Records, readies sophomore album

JR Gomezis a veteran musician in the Tejano industry, spending time with legendary bandsLa Fiebre,Mazz, andKumbia All-Starz,to name just a few. Now, the Grammy winner has signed withBaby Grand Records, the record label owned by super-producerMario Ortiz, as Gomez continues to work on his highly-anticipated sophomore album.

“I’ve been wanting to work with anybody to just give that chance and Mario’s been a good friend of mine for a long time, we toured together withJay Perez, of course, and done a lot of projects together,” Gomez tellsTejano Nation. “Mario’s always believed in me and he’s always dreamed of having this record label and I told him let me be your artist. It is an awesome feeling to be a part of Baby Grand Records and for Mario to believe in me and invest in me.”

Gomezreleased “He Tratado de Olvidarte” last summer, the lead single from his upcoming sophomore album that was produced by Ortiz. It will be the follow-up to his solo debut album,Cervezas Y Gritos, released in 2019. Analbum that earned GomeztwoTejano Music Awardsin 2020 for Best New Male Artist and Best New Group with hisConjunto Bandits.

“We’re going to go a little bit more Conjunto progressive, I guess you can call it that,” Gomez said. “Think about back in the days withDavid Lee (Garza)andEmilio (Navaira)or even with Jay (Perez), it was accordion and sax. We still got a little bit of Conjunto in there, of course. We got some songs that are straight up Conjunto, as well as some catchy cumbias and we got a drinking song on there too. It’s going to be a little more progressive than the last album.”

Fans can expect a new cumbia from Gomez within the next few weeks as the second single from the upcoming album, a song co-written by Gomez and his father,Lee Gomez.
