Shelly Laresopens up about her friendship with late Latin music iconSelenaduring a television interview recently released after the “Queen of Cumbia”was posthumously honoredwith a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on March 14.

The interview, recorded before the pandemic, is one of only three that “Little Miss Dynamite” has given about her childhood friend since Selena was murdered in 1995. Lares says fans want to know more about the friendship, according to the interviewwith San Antonio television station News 4 WOAI.

“It’s like the fans just – they’re so curious about her and they want to know personal things and I will share some memories but I think where people kind of forget is I lost a friend, I lost a sister, not her as the entertainer,” Lares said. “I knew hands down there will never be another Selena I don’t care what anyone tries to do. She was a force to be reckoned with and she was amazing and her music will live on forever.”

Lares also shared what she believes Selena would be doing if she wasn’t murdered almost 26 years ago at the age of 23. “She would have done it all,” she said. “I know that her clothing and her design were super important to her. She had a lot of things that she was passionate about, not just music. She was still ready and willing to evolve as a woman and person, as a businesswoman. There’s no doubt in my mind that she would have been because no disrespect to any of the Pop artists that are out there but they can’t touch her to this day vocally, performance-wise and she probably would have been a great actress too. There’s just no other.”

The Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame singer, who recently celebrated 39 years in the Tejano industry, shared many memories of Selena during the interview with veteran San Antonio television personalityRandy Beamer.
