Tejano industry mourns the passing of musician and producer Mario Vigil

Award-winning musician and producerMario Vigilpassed away on Sunday (Feb. 2) after a two-year battle with colon cancer. He was 35.

Vigil’s wife, singerNikki Lopez Vigil,confirmed the news via social mediaearly Sunday morning, “I watched the love of my life take his last breath. I will see you soon baby it won’t be long till we are in heaven together!”

The talented musician wasdiagnosed with colon cancerjust three months after thecouple wed in November 2017.

Vigilwon a Grammy Awardas a member of the band for Tejano music legendRuben Ramosand the Mexican Revolution for the album “Viva La Revolucion” in 2008. He was a sought after musician and performed withGary Hobbs,Jay Perez, and more.

He also produced music for Tejano Hall of Famers, likeStephanie Lynn, and rising stars, including the debut album for his wife, Nikki Lopez.

The Tejano industry mourned the loss of Vigil with messages and memories on Sunday.

Ruben Ramossaid in a statement, “Mario Vigil was a great friend, musician and a talented individual. He will be miss(ed) dearly.”

“Today is a very sad day,” saidDavid Marezvia social media. “My music brother Mario Vigil lost his battle. He was a husband, a brother, a father, a son, a monster musician who we will all miss deeply.”

Stefani Montielsaid, “My heart is in pieces for my friend Nikki Lopez Vigil. Her soul mate and the love of her life Mario Vigil has gained his wings and is now soaring in paradise. No more pain. No more suffering. Thank you Lord for allowing us to know and witness such an amazing talent and his true love of music, his family and for his wife. You are so great and good in all you do. Rest now Mario and take your place in the incomparable band in the heavens with all your incredible talent.

You will be deeply missed.”

Gabriel Zavalaadded, “My heart is broken cause he is no longer with us, but I know his soul is now free and in the best of company. Rest easy Mario. Fly with the angles. You’ll be forever in our hearts.”

Latin Groove Music said it best, “Gifted guitarist, accordionist, composer, and one of the most sought-after Tejano producers. His guitar playing was absolutely prodigious. He leaves a rich music legacy in recordings, collaborations, and new songs. Our heartfelt condolences, love, and prayers to Nikki and the whole Vigil family, as well as to all of his musical family of artists, musicians, and fans. Rest in peace music maestro.”
