Today's Datebook

187 years ago . . . In 1830, a poet named Sarah Josepha Hale, of Newport, New Hampshire, published a poem called "Mary Had A Little Lamb". .

In 1899, the first auto repair shop in history opened in Boston and, we assume, instantly started ripping people off and crushing their financial stability.

In 1968, MICK JAGGER and his nasty girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, were arrested for MARIJUANA POSSESSION. Don't do drugs or you could end up in jail!

47 years ago . . . In 1970, PETER GREEN, one of the founders of Fleetwood Mac, quit the band for a perfectly reasonable reason . . . to join a RELIGIOUS CULT. He was pretty into LSD at the time. Don't do drugs or you could end up in a religious cult! 37 years ago . . .

29 years ago . . . In 1988, the amazing JOHN MOSCHITTA. . . the guy from those Micro Machines commercials back in the '80s . . . set the Guinness World Record for fast talking. He talked at a rate of 586 words per minute.

28 years ago . . . In 1989, "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade" hit theaters. If only that HAD been the Last Crusade. If only.

27 years ago . . . In 1990, as a response to the MILLI VANILLI lip-synching scandal, the New Jersey legislature proposed a bill that would REQUIRE MUSIC VENUES TO NOTIFY AUDIENCES WHEN AN ACT LIP-SYNCHS. The bill didn't pass. (It sounds a bit silly to try to LEGISLATE this. But on the other hand, nowadays, almost everybody lip-synchs, and for some reason, we don't care. Did we cheat ourselves?)

Happy Birthday to:

Rosanne Cash is 62. Country singer and Johnny's daughter.

Priscilla Presley is 72. Elvis's ex-widfe and Lisa Marie's mother. But more important, she was Jane Spencer in "The Naked Gun 2-and-a-half".

Tommy Chong is 79. The Chong of Cheech & Chong and a worldwide pot smoker. In 2003, the DEA arrested 55 people for selling marijuana bongs and pipes. Chong was the only famous one....and the only one to do time.
