Laura Denisse Y Los Brillantes, a new Americana act with Mexican roots, has released a live version “Mexico Americano” after its Facebook performance earned more than 3 million views in four days. The song celebrates the dual identity and cultural heritage of Mexican Americans. It was written by Rumel Fuentes, a poet and activist who was part of the Chicano Movement in the 1960s and 1970s.
Laura Denisse Y Los Brillantes first performed “Mexico Americano” on Facebook earlier this month, and the video went viral. It reached more than 3.9 million views in just four days, and it is still gaining popularity.
The band’s lead singer, Laura Denisse, says that they were amazed by the response they got from their fans. “We had so much fun performing ‘Mexico Americano’, then seeing it take off on Facebook we knew we wanted to record it. So we added it to our set list and recorded a live version!” she says.
The live version of “Mexico Americano” was recorded at The Mountain City Barn, a historic venue in Tennessee that hosts live music events. The song is available on all digital platforms today (Wednesday, Aug. 30), leading up to Hispanic Heritage Month.
