Phoebe And Mike Almost Didn't End Up Together On 'Friends'

Friends has been off the air for 15 years, but fans are just as devoted as ever. While we may not be getting a revival series any time soon, the cast and creators are always down to talk about the beloved sitcom. In a recent interview, co-creator David Crane spilled some major tea about Phoebe Buffay. It turns out, she almost didn't end up Mike Hannigan.

Though Phoebe and Mike did end up tying the knot on Friends, there was a period of time when the writers considered a different happily ever after for Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock. As fans know, Phoebe's ex-boyfriend David returns in the final season and attempts to win her back. He does for a while, however, Phoebe ultimately gets back together with Mike. It's hard to imagine Phoebe's romantic storyline playing out any other way, Crane said David almost won out in the end.

"There was definitely a possibility of that," Crane said about Phoebe and David as Friends endgame. Crane talked about the period of time the writers "went back and forth" over which love interest was the one for Phoebe. Adding to the difficulty of the decision was the fact that Hank Azaria and Paul Rudd are both such likable and talented actors. "They’re both amazing actors. I mean, both Paul and Hank are fantastic, and fantastic with her.

Crane admitted he can't remember the nuances of the David vs Mike debate after all these years. Even though "it could have gone the other way," Crane believes there was no wrong choice because "Phoebe would have been great with either one."

Were you Team David or Team Mike?
