The lineup has been announced for the first annual Forever Jimmy G Music Fest in Brownsville, Texas later this month that will benefit a local charity.

Gary Hobbs,Javier Galvan,The Jimmy G Tribute Bandand more will perform at the music festival honoring late Tejano iconJimmy Gonzalezon Sunday, June 30 at Dean Porter Park in his hometown.

Gonzalez died of cardiac arrest in June 2018. He was 67.

Cristina Salinas, a former backup vocalist for Gonzalez, spoke about the event in a video on social media on Monday.

“He was a big family man,” she said. “Families can come and listen, so we can teach the younger generation about Tejano music. There is a video of Jimmy saying how much we need to incorporate our culture to our younger generation…Jimmy gave 40 years of his life and dedicated his entire time, his life, his music to the Tejano community.”

Tickets for the event will be $10 with children 12 years of age and under admitted free, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Revival of Cultural Arts (ROCA), a local non-profit organization which supports underprivileged citizens in gaining musical background.

According to Salinas, Gonzalez had a similar situation as a teenager. “That’s exactly what happened with Jimmy,” she said. “His parents got him his first guitar at 14-years-old, you know, underprivileged and stuff like that, and he was self-taught. Ambitious person that he was, perfectionist that he was, he mastered it.”

Gonzalez was a pioneer, a legend and a multiple Grammy Award winner that achieved international acclaim as co-founder of one of the most successful Tejano groups ever, Mazz.

The first annual Forever Jimmy G Music Fest will take place at Dean Porter Park, 501 E. Ringgold Street, in Brownsville, Texas on June 30, 2019. More information, tickets, and merchandise at ForeverJimmyG.com.
