Tejano music legend Jay Perez will be honored with a Texas state flag to be flown over the Texas Capitol building on February 7 for his 25 years of accomplishments in the Tejano music industry as a solo artist.

The multiple Tejano Music Awards winner will be recognized by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as a vital influence in the Texas music scene and his dedication as a singer as one of the best of the Lone Star State.

“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege and it’s something to be excited about,” Perez told Tejano Nation. “To get this kind of recognition from your peers and of course the governor of Texas and the Texas music scene that notices my work over the 25 years.  I’m overjoyed with excitement and I’m very excited that this is happening to me and not just myself, but these Tejano artists that have been doing it for so many years, it’s time they also get the recognition in this format.”

Perez began his career as lead vocalist for Latin Breed and then later as lead vocalist David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales before embarking on his solo career.

“I have a lot of people to thank that started me out,” Perez added. “The Latin Breed — Gibby Escobedo, Gilbert Velasquez, Richard Solis, Pete Garza, may God rest his soul — of course David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales. They took me under their wing and showed me the ropes. When they let me go, let me free to do my thing, it’s been 25 years of nothing but kick ass 100% Tejano music.”

Perez is planning to release an album, 25th Anniversary, dedicated to his 25 years as a solo artist in Spring 2018 and has already released the lead single “Basta De Tu Amor.”
