Selena fans are frustrated over the recent commemorative cups promotion with Stripes Convenience Stores this week.
The Dallas-based company worked with the late Tejano star’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, to create two cup designs in celebration of the third annual Fiesta de La Flor, a two-day music festival in Corpus Christi that which honors Selena’s legacy, according to a press release. The cups were to be sold at select stores in Corpus Christi, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Midland/Odessa and San Antonio.
Some of the frustration began when the San Antonio stores didn’t receive any cups to sell.
Stripes Spokesperson Jeamy Molina told mySA.com the five San Antonio stores “did not receive the cups as planned.”
“We are truly sorry and we share in your disappointment,” Molina added. “Because of overwhelming response from our guests, we do not have any extra cups to send to San Antonio.”
Selena fans in other cities were frustrated over the small quantity of product in the other stores and some stores had began selling the cups before the March 1 launch date.
“None left in Houston, some stores I called even admitted to selling out days ago,” Selena fan Adrian Montenegro commented on the Stripes Facebook page. “Very disappointed in the way this was handled and now to find out that they are selling on eBay for 10times the retail price is just greedy, I’m sure Selena did not want her memory to be remembered in this way.”
This isn’t the first time that a company has found out about the powerful buying power of Tejanos, MAC Cosmetics had a similar problem with demand when the Selena MAC Collection went on sale in October 2016, with the brand selling out in the first day.
