SAN ANTONIO, TX — Tejano music takes center stage in the season finale of Leguizamo Does America, as Emmy-winning actor and comedian John Leguizamo explores the vibrant Latino heritage of San Antonio, Texas. The episode, which premiered August 10, wraps up Season 2 of the hit series with an energetic deep dive into the city’s rich history, culture, cuisine, and music.
Leguizamo’s road trip brings him face-to-face with some of San Antonio’s most influential figures, including Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla, Congressman Joaquin Castro, and Tejano music icon Shelly Lares. Known affectionately as “Little Miss Dynamite,” Lares is currently an Artist in Residence at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where she has been mentoring the next generation of musicians.
Lares gave Leguizamo and viewers an exclusive master class on Tejano music, blending education with a few surprises crafted just for the series. “When I got the call from Adam, one of the producers out of New York, that they wanted me to be part of the series, I was floored,” said Lares. “To represent Tejano and our culture musically, and to feature my students at UTSA, was an honor. I educated a little bit on what Tejano music is — but you’ll have to watch to see the surprises. John was amazing — super funny, humble, optimistic, and just full of good energy.”
The San Antonio episode captures the essence of the city’s Latino roots and celebrates the contributions of its diverse community. From music to politics and food, Leguizamo showcases how Latino culture continues to shape the Alamo City’s identity.
