Shortly after the highly anticipated Selena y Los Dinos won the prestigious Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, the film was pulled from the festival’s online streaming platform. The removal follows reports of piracy, with footage from the documentary being shared on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

The film, directed by Isabel Castro, takes an in-depth look at the rise of Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla-Perez, providing never-before-seen archival material and personal insights into her life. Its early success at the festival was marked by rave reviews, particularly for its emotional resonance and its meticulous attention to the archival footage that paints a vivid picture of Selena’s impact on music and culture.

However, the film’s online availability soon became a target for pirates, as users began posting unauthorized snippets ranging from one to three minutes in length. This prompted the Sundance Film Festival to take swift action. According to an official statement, the organization removed Selena y Los Dinos from its streaming site to prevent further leaks, marking the first time such an issue has arisen in the festival’s five years of offering virtual access to ticket-holders.

The emailed statement read, “We regret that you will no longer be able to access the film on the platform. We acknowledge and regret that this may cause disappointment, however part of our commitment to advocating for independent filmmakers is ensuring that they can protect their art that they have created and earn a living — now and in the future.”

Sundance made it clear that it takes piracy and copyright infringement seriously, even stating its intent to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities. The festival also emphasized its commitment to safeguarding intellectual property and ensuring the artists’ rights are upheld.

This move has left many fans disappointed, especially those who had hoped to watch the documentary about Selena’s rise to fame. Still, the festival and the creative team behind the film have expressed their dedication to protecting the integrity of the documentary and its future release.

Selena y Los Dinos, which had been one of the most eagerly awaited films at this year’s Sundance Festival, was celebrated for its poignant exploration of the singer’s legacy. The documentary’s win for Archival Storytelling was seen as a fitting tribute to Selena’s enduring influence, offering fans a deeper understanding of the late singer’s life and career.

With piracy concerns now addressed, many are hopeful that the film will soon find a more permanent and protected release avenue, allowing audiences to fully experience the powerful narrative of one of Tejano music’s greatest icons.
