Freddy Fender, a native of San Benito, Texas, was a crossover success story around the world. On June 4th, Fender would have turned 87 years old. To commemorate this occasion, Tejano Gold Countdown will revisit a memorable interview from the past, allowing listeners to once again hear from this big legend of Tejano music.

Fender’s hit song, “When The Next Teardrop Falls,” holds a significant place in country music history. It was placed at #47 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. In two weeks, the single and album of the same name will begin their 50th-year celebration, marking the period from June 1974-1975.

The focus on Fender’s career impact has grown through advocacy in Texas and Nashville for his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, among other honors. This weekend’s tribute is a testament to Fender’s enduring legacy and the profound influence he had on Tejano music and beyond.
