Jennifer Peña and Obie Bermudez announce separation

Jennifer Peña, the San Antonio native who scored a string of Tejano and Latin pop hits, has separated from her husband Obie Bermudez, the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter who topped the Latin pop charts with songs like “Antes” and “Todo el Año”. The couple made separate announcements on Saturday, August 19, 2023, on their social media accounts, shocking their longtime fans who had followed their musical and personal journey for more than a decade.

Peña and Bermudez met in 2005 when they collaborated on the song “Tu Nombre”, which was part of Peña’s album “Seducción”. They fell in love and got married in 2007 in a private ceremony in Las Vegas. They have five children together, including one born in 2020.

The pair had been out of the spotlight for several years until they reemerged in 2021 as celebrity contestants on the dance competition show “Asi Se Baila”. They impressed the judges and the audience with their chemistry and talent, reaching the finals of the show. In one of their performances, Bermudez surprised Peña by pulling out a ring and asking her to marry him again, saying that he didn’t do it right the first time and that he was still just as nervous but a little more mature.

However, behind the scenes, the couple was going through a difficult time that led them to separate last year. They decided to keep their separation private until now, when they both shared their statements on Instagram Stories.

Peña wrote: “It was with a great deal of care and consideration that Obie and I made the difficult decision to separate last year. We ask that you give us grace and privacy as we navigate this new chapter of our lives.”

Bermudez wrote: “I want to share with you that Jennifer and I are no longer together romantically, but we remain united in a much deeper and more important way. As parents of five wonderful children, we are more together than ever in the love we share for them. We have a bond that keeps us together in raising and caring for our children, a bond that unites us and will always unite us. I am very grateful for your interest in our lives and we hope that you understand and respect our decision to focus on our family and our solo careers.”

The news of their separation saddened many fans who expressed their support and love for both artists. Peña and Bermudez are considered two of the most successful Latin pop singers of their generation, with multiple awards and nominations, including Latin Grammys. Peña is also known for her Tejano albums that made her a force in the genre, as well as for her role in the 2006 MTV film “All You’ve Got” with Ciara and Adrienne Bailon. Bermudez is also a producer and composer who has worked with artists like Ricky MartinThaliaLuis Fonsi, and Ednita Nazario.
