If you are a fan of Tejano music, you may have heard of Alicia C, a talented singer who is making waves in the genre with her versatile voice and style. Alicia C, whose full name is Alicia Cintron, is a San Antonio native who grew up on the Texas border in Eagle Pass. She was influenced by her parents’ musical talent and exposed to a variety of sounds, such as cumbia, tropical, conjunto, norteño, and traditional mariachi.
Alicia C started singing at a young age and participated in several talent shows and competitions. She also joined a mariachi group in high school and performed at various events and festivals. She always dreamed of pursuing a career in music, but she faced some challenges along the way. She was told that her voice was too traditional and that mariachi music was the only thing she could do well.
However, Alicia C did not give up on her passion. She decided to explore different types of music and challenge herself as an artist. She also found a mentor and producer in Shelly Lares, a Tejano legend who is known as “Little Miss Dynamite”. Lares has been working with Alicia C to develop her sound and vocal skills, as well as to guide her in the music business.
“It has been amazing working with Shelly Lares but it was definitely challenging,” Alicia C tells Tejano Nation. “She pushed me past my comfort zone. but she trusted in my abilities and believed in me. I have grown tremendously because of her and I’m so thankful for that.”
Alicia C released her highly-anticipated debut EP, Cada Parte De Mi (Every Part Of Me), on July 28, 2023. The EP includes seven songs that cover different genres and styles, such as international, bolero, and pop. Each song features its own unique sound and identity, which reflects Alicia C’s personality and musical influences. Alicia C hopes to reintroduce traditional mariachi vocals to younger generations and blend them with new flavors and beats.
“This album is different, it isn’t what everyone is used to hearing me sing,” said Alicia C. “It is the first of many and I’m so proud to show everyone all of the different sides of me. I wanted this album to be a reflection of who I was, who I am, and who I will be and I think it was captured perfectly.”
The project features songs written by Lares and members of her Shell Shock Records 3 team, like José Rosario and David Hernandez, known as “El Gallo Dez,” another rising star in Tejano music.
“The team at Shell Shock Records 3 have been so instrumental in putting this whole album together and I’m so blessed to call them family,” said Alicia C.
One of her favorite songs on the album is the duet with her mother, “Orgullo Mio.”
“It is special to me because my mom is who taught me how to sing. I grew up listening to her every day,” commented Alicia C. “The last time that I heard my mom sing was when I was 16 years old. And when the chance for us to sing together came we had to take it. I’m so proud of her at the age of 70 she was finally able to experience a recording studio and hear herself professionally and the look on her face was unforgettable.”
Her partner, Mary Ruth (A Black Sheep Creation), keeps everything flowing smoothly for Alicia C, who takes all the photos, films the music videos and does all the behind-the-scenes work.
