Destiny Navaira, the next generation of the Navaira musical legacy, recently sat down with Tejano Nation to discuss her journey in life and music at the Noche Tejana event at the House of Blues Foundation Room in Houston, Texas, on July 22. In the interview with Tejano Nation contributor Lily Marie, she shared details on her new project, Las Letras De Mi Padre, her YouTube reality series, and much more.
Destiny’s debut solo album, “La Preferida,” earned her a Female Vocalist of the Year win at the 41st Tejano Music Awards in 2021, placing her in elite company with Tejano music icons like Selena, Laura Canales, Elida Reyna, Shelly Lares, and Stefani Montiel. She spoke about keeping not only her family’s legacy but the legacy of amazing female talent in the Tejano music industry going for many generations, with her own voice and legacy with her own music.
“I think there’s definitely a wave. I think we need to really pay attention to the quality of what, especially what women are doing because we are so critiqued so much more,” she said. “That’s what I try to do in my music is make sure everything is exactly how I want it. Make sure everything has purpose and I think that’s what makes the difference for me. I know what I’m doing because I want it to be that way. It’s tough but it’s been rewarding.”
In addition to her music career, Destiny has also premiered a YouTube reality series called “Destiny Sin Fronteras” on her YouTube channel. The bilingual series focuses on Destiny’s weight loss journey, career, and life in Texas and Monterrey, Mexico, where she has lived for the past three years. The Latin Grammy-nominated singer partnered with Monterrey-based medical and wellness company Health Sin Fronteras to document her adventures in life and music.
“It’s about medical tourism. I’m going to show people throughout the series that coming from Texas to Mexico isn’t that big a deal. There’s a lot Mexico, especially Monterrey, has to offer,” said Destiny. “You’re going to see the whole process. Not just with the medical stuff but with my life, with the music. A lot of people know that I’ve been on a weight loss journey for about 5 years now. I’m just really going to be exposing myself and letting it all out there because I want you guys to see that this industry, it’s not about little steps it’s about risks.”
The Navaira musical legacy continues with Destiny, following in the footsteps of her father, Raulito Navaira, and late uncle Emilio Navaira, Tejano icons.
“My music may be a little different but it’s Tejano. I’m from Texas, and I use the sounds. I write the lyrics and we arrange and I learned that from my dad, I learned that from my uncle,” she said. “They had a huge part in building the home that Tejano is and I’m just trying to help decorate it.”
Destiny Navaira is a rising star in the Tejano music industry and is definitely one to watch. Be sure to check out her latest music and follow her journey on her YouTube reality series “Destiny Sin Fronteras.”
