Selena continues to influence some of today’s biggest music stars including Colombian singer Karol G, who became only the second woman to achieve a milestone that only Selena had done before 27 years ago, occupying the top two spots on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart.
Karol G’s collaboration with Becky G, another chart-topping singer influenced by Selena, has been on top of the Hot Latin Songs chart for 10 straight weeks with “Mamiii” and Karol G’s latest single release, “Provenza,” debuted at No. 2 this week.
The only other time this happened was in 1995 with Selena’s “Tu Solo Tu” and “If I Could Fall In Love” ranked at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in September 1995.
Billboard made the news official this week via Instagram, “With the debut of ‘Provenza’ at No. 2 and ‘Mamiii’ holding at No. 1 this week, #KarolG becomes only the second woman to hold Nos. 1 and 2 on Billboard’s #HotLatinSongs chart simultaneously since #Selena did it in 1995.”

Karol G has always mentioned Selena as one of her biggest influences, even getting a tattoo of Selena’s face on her arm in 2018 and most recently paid tribute to the late Latin music icon performing “Como La Flor” as part of her Coachella performance last month.

“I fell in love with Selena when I was 11 years old after watching her movie,” Karol, born Carolina Giraldo, told Entertainment Tonight in 2018. “[I loved that] she was always working with her father because the same happened to me. My father was always with me, all the time. I started researching about her story, and todas las cosas que ella hizo [all the things she did].”
“I want to be a legend like her,” Karol continued. “Not a person that passes and people forget about. I think she is, she still has number ones on Billboard and she’s still being nominated for awards and it’s been over 20 years since her death. She’s a legend and that’s what I want. Entonces ella de verdad es mi mayor inspiración [she’s truly my biggest inspiration].”
It’s undeniable that Karol G has paralleled Selena with this latest news and the 31-year-old star will achieve crossover stardom and is currently one of the leading ladies in Latin music.
