TheTejano Music Alliance of Texas(TMAT) canceled their 4th annual New Year’s Eve Gala featuringLa 45due to concerns over the rise of COVID-19 cases in Austin and Travis County,according to a statementreleased by the non-profit organization on Wednesday (Dec. 29).
“Due to the rapid escalation of Covid-19 cases in Austin and Travis County, the move to Stage 4 declared today by the City of Austin, and TMAT’s concern for the safety and well being of our guests, we have decided to cancel the New Year’s Eve Gala that was scheduled for December3 1st, 2021, at the Onion Creek Ballroom,” saidTomas Medina, TMAT President. “We regret any inconvenience our decision may cause you, but the safety of our guests and citizens of our community are of utmost importance to our organization. We believe the cancellation of this event is the only responsible action we could take and the right thing to do. The entire staff of the Tejano Music Alliance join me in wishing you and yours the very best of the holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year.”
COVID-19 cases in Austin-Travis County are surging just weeks after the omicron variant was detected in the area. As a result, the Community Transmission Rate (CTR), test positivity rate, and the 7-day moving average of hospital admissions are spiking. These key indicators are above thresholds that necessitated officials to transition to Stage 4 of Risk-Based Guidelines.
“One of the greatest traits of Austin-Travis County is how we have consistently been one of the leaders in the state when it comes to lower Community Transmission Rates. Our people have continually stepped up for the greater good and been the example of how to navigate the COVID-19 surges with masking, social distancing, and vaccinations,” saidDr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County Health Authority. “However, as our vigilance begins to wane, our community is falling behind. We can’t afford to be lax in our prevention efforts and I’m confident that Austin-Travis County will once again lead the way.”
For tickets already purchased for the 4th annual New Year’s Eve Gala, a representative from TMAT will contact the purchaser for a refund of the ticket price. No action required will be required of the purchaser.
