The family ofSelenaand Netflix are being sued over the highly-anticipatedSelena: The Series,an upcoming show based on the late Latin music icon’s life.
According to court documents,Moctesuma Esparza, who produced the 1997 filmSelena, is accusingAbraham Quintanillaof violating a contract agreement signed in 1195, in which he was allegedly given the rights to the life stories of Selena,TMZ reports.
Esparza is seeking $1 million for breach of contract from Quintanilla and is suing Netflix for ignoring his previous deal with the Quintanilla family by creatingSelena: The Series,set to premiereon the streaming service on December 4.
In the lawsuit, Esparza alleges that after the success of the original film, he and Abraham Quintanilla discussed their own follow-up series, mini-series, or film about a young Selena.Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, is also named in the suit.
Reps for Quintanilla and Netflix have yet to respond to the suit.
