The Tejano music community is mourning the loss of one of its own. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a wife, mother of two, and beloved Tejano radio host in Kansas City, was confirmed killed in the shooting at the end of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade celebration on Wednesday.
According to The Kansas City Star, Lopez-Galvan died during surgery at a hospital from a gunshot wound to her abdomen Wednesday afternoon. She was a disc jockey for community radio station KKFI and co-host of the weekly radio program “A Taste of Tejano” with Tommy Andrade every Tuesday night.
Lopez-Galvan was a longtime Kansas City Chiefs fan, excited about Wednesday’s Super Bowl victory celebration. She was among the thousands of people who gathered to celebrate the team’s NFL championship. Police said that one person was killed and 22 others were wounded by gunshots in the area. Three suspects have been detained.
Friends and family described Lopez-Galvan as a wonderful, beautiful person who was full of life. She had a husband and two adult children. Her Facebook page was filled with messages of hope and prayer before her death was confirmed.
KKFI released a statement via social media. “It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family. We encourage anyone who feels they saw something to reach out to law enforcement at 816 234 5111. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”
Lopez-Galvan’s son and two cousins were also reportedly injured in the shooting. Their conditions are unknown.
