Other winners included Jessica Sanchez, who took the award for best new female artist; and the Hometown Boys, who took the award for conjunto album of the year, “Manteniendo La Promesa.”

Reyna also won for her song, “Juntos Hasta Morir” with Jesse Turner, who also won male vocalist of the year — his second such award.

Reyna was unable to attend the awards show because of a performance in Brownsville.

The event returned to the Alamodome after several years in smaller venues, and took place in the Illusions Theater. Fans from across the United States attended.

“We came from Kansas City,” said Laura Ledesma, who attended the show with her husband Manuel Ledesma. “We had come last year and it was a total different experience,” she said.

San Antonio native and award show host Jesse Borrego kept the crowd of nearly 2,500 fired up between musical performances from Shelly Lares, Ruben Ramos, and San Antonio musicians Girl in a Coma and Stefani Montiel.

“I like them all: Emilio Navaira, Jimmy Gonzalez, and Michael Salgado,” said Marizela Torres, who was attending the Award show for a second year.

Michael Salgado, who was nominated for four Tejano Music Awards including song of the year (“Honky Tonk and Cantinas”) and male vocalist of the year, was glowing at being recognized for his work.

“It feels awesome,” Salgado said. “Four nominations — it's just very exciting.”

Ricky Valdez was named best new male artist and Jessica Sanchez best new female artist.

Tejano Highway 281 was awarded best new group.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to three well-known personalities: Johnny Canales, host of the “Johnny Canales TV Show” which aired on Univision in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico; along with Tejano singer Elsa Garcia and conjunto accordionist Mingo Saldivar.

The awards, which began in 1980, are sponsored by the Texas Talent Musicians Association, headquartered in San Antonio.

Corporate sponsors include corporate sponsors that include Hermes Music, KXTN Univision Radio, BNet Radio, La Prensa of San Antonio, Budweiser, Telemundo KVDA 60 San Antonio and Devine Design and Photography.
